Tiahui is a nahuatl word that roughly translates to: moving forward, strength, or always in movement. Our ancestors used this word to empower each other, and to remind ourselves and others that we all have that fire within us, the power of will that allows us to keep moving forward. The goal for our programs is to explore our identity and our history, to understand our role in the present and take action to create a better future.
Tiahui was born in spring 2021 as our communities were adjusting to their new realities post pandemic. We began as a virtual full-week out-of-school program for bilingual students experiencing a complete year of remote learning. Tiahui is a nahuatl (indigenous mexica) phrase for "forward together," en español, Adelante, ¡Vamos! and became our grito of collective encouragement moving forward out of the pandemic.
¡Tiahui! programming is growing and becoming more popular among 2nd-16th grade students, families, teachers, administrators, and a range of community members and organizations. ¡Tiahui! programs create culturally immersive learning environments, in which all participants and attendees are engaged in theme-based activities and projects designed to develop holistic and integrated skills and knowledge in literacy, bilingualism, STEM, Arts, Culture, History, Movement, and Music.
