Land & Liberation July 2022
'Another world is possible' was the theme. Students used art and culture to explore how they can create a better world for themselves, their bodies, their families, and their communities.
For the past 3 years we have celebrated dia de los muertos at the Burnham Wildlife Corridor - La Ronda Parakata gathering space. Following traditions from Mexico we start with a community procession to cross the bridge and reach the Ronda. We have collaborated with the artists who have made the Ronda Parakta to decorate it with Cempasuchitl grown at UIC. We finish the event by sharing danza, cantos, and art.
Over 100 elementary, middle, highschool students and family members participated in interactive culturally-responsive programming with cross-age mentorship and community building.
Tiahui is a nahuatl word that roughly translates to: moving forward, strength, or always in movement. Our ancestors used this word to empower each other, and to remind ourselves and others that we all have that fire within us, the power of will that allows us to keep moving forward. The goal for spring break camp is to explore our identity and our history, to understand our role in the present and take action to create a better future.
Celebrating 110 years of the Revolution through an interactive evening of improv theater, music, and trivia games for students of all ages, parents, and teachers alike.
